Atlanta Riding Academy now offers Achievement Awards for Excellence in Horsemanship

The program is designed to allow you to work at your own pace. This format is more individualized than traditional horse day camps. Students will work through each action item during independent studies at home and by scheduling un-mounted workshops and practices up to two times per week in addition to riding lessons. Riders leasing a horse must be working on Level 3 skills.  All riders will need to pass a Level 1 Evaluation before enrolling in over fences classes.



Atlanta Riding One-Star :
   



  • Pass a written test. Test can be taken as many times as the rider desires until passed. Schedule with instructor.
  • Read 2 issues of Practical Horseman Magazine. Provide the following for each issue: Date of the issue and a brief summary of 3 articles in the in the issue
  • Prepare a horse for show turn-out 
  • Read: The United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship: Basics for Beginners/D Level
  • View at Least 2 Lessons. Viewing lessons are a wonderful, FREE way to increase your equestrian education. Write a brief summary on each lesson detailing what you learned.
  • Demonstrate a quick release knot.
  • Take apart a bridle, identify all parts, and put it back together again
  • Identify parts of the horse
  • Clean stalls Saturday or Sunday horse chores.
  • Register to volunteer one hour of service to the Little Creek Conservancy

Atlanta Riding Two-Star:

  • Prepare a yearly budget for a horse that includes board, vet, farrier and worming , and vaccination schedule. 
  • Health, Nuitrition, Vital Signs and emergency care.
  • Demonstrate aging a horse by his teeth.
  • Attend a trailering workshop that covers safety checks for lights, tires, brakes and hitches.
  • Pass the advanced Written Test
  • Attend at least 2 horse shows either as a groom or as a competitor.
  • Attend a clinic and write at least one page on what you learned.
  • Demonstrate how to correctly put on polo wraps and standing wraps.
  • View at least 5 lessons.
  • Pull and Braid a mane.
  • Read a Pony Club book higher than Level D and schedule an appointment with your instructor after completing each section for an oral quiz.
  • Longe a horse at the walk, trot and canter both directions with and without side-reins.
  • Correctly identify different types of bits. 
  • Summary of USEF rules.
  • Write a report on the following topic:
Auxillary aides: Identify at least 3 different types. How they work. What situations they are appropriate for. What skills the rider needs in order to use them correctly. (spurs, draw reins, standing, running and german martingales etc)

High School Riding Club High School and Middle School riders meet once a month. Club members complete horsemanship activities, compete in shows and attend field trips to earn points.

WHAT LEVEL RIDER ARE YOU?

Becoming a good rider involves repetition. The skills listed for each level requires hours of practice over and over. Riders will work on each level 12 to 24 months before moving to the next level. Everyone progresses at a different rate. Level 1 riders must be able to perform ring figures posting trot on correct diagonal, without stirrups and ride 4 lessons in a row without being reminded to keep heel down before cantering. All level 1 skills need to be strong before moving to Level 2.  There are no short cuts for mastering the material.
