Atlanta Riding Academy now offers Achievement Awards for Excellence in Horsemanship

The program is designed to allow you to work at your own pace. This format will be more individualized than traditional horse day camps. Students will work through each action item during independent studies at home and by scheduling un-mounted workshops and practices up to two times per week in addition to riding lessons. It is offered to both adults and juniors and is strongly recommended to anyone planning on showing or becoming future horse owners.

Atlanta Riding Academy will offer both a One-Star rating and a Two-Star rating (AR*) and (AR**). Students earning their One-Star rating will get a T-shirt featuring the rating achieved, their own grooming tools in a tote, and a certificate. Students earning their Two-Star will get a jacket and a certificate as well as a saddle pad featuring the rating achieved.
   



Atlanta Riding One-Star (AR*) Requirements:

  • Pass a written test. Test can be taken as many times as the rider desires until passed. Schedule with instructor.
  • Read 2 issues of Practical Horseman Magazine. Provide the following for each issue: Date of the issue and a brief summary of 3 articles in the in the issue
  • Prepare a horse for show turn-out (guidelines can be obtained from instructor).
  • Read: The United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship: Basics for Beginners/D Level
  • View at Least 2 Lessons. Viewing lessons are a wonderful, FREE way to increase your equestrian education. Write a brief summary on each lesson detailing what you learned.
  • Demonstrate a quick release knot.
  • Take apart a bridle, identify all parts, and put it back together again
  • Identify parts of the horse
  • Clean stalls Saturday or Sunday horse chores.
  • Register to volunteer one hour of service to the Little Creek Conservancy

Atlanta Riding Two-Star (AR**) Requirements:

  • Pass the One-Star Rating
  • Prepare a 3 month budget for a horse that includes board, vet, farrier and worming.
  • Prepare a 12 month worming schedule and vaccination schedule.
  • Describe the causes and symptoms of colic, founder, EPM, Strangles and EIA.
  • Vital signs
  • Demonstrate aging a horse by his teeth.
  • Attend a trailering workshop that covers safety checks for lights, tires, brakes and hitches.
  • Pass the advanced Written Test
  • Read 12 issues of Practical Horseman magazine and write a brief summary of at least 2 articles in each issue.
  • Cut out a magazine picture and critique the position in the format used by George Morris in his Jumping Clinic article in PH. You may NOT use a pic taken from that column.
  • Attend at least 2 horse shows either as a groom or as a competitor.
  • Attend at least 2 clinics and write at least one page on what you learned.
  • Demonstrate how to correctly put on polo wraps and standing wraps.
  • View at least 5 lessons.
  • Pull and Braid a mane.
  • Read a Pony Club book higher than Level D and schedule an appointment with your instructor after completing each section for an oral quiz.
  • Longe a horse at the walk, trot and canter both directions with and without side-reins.
  • Correctly identify different types of bits. Know which are legal in the hunters.
  • Write a report on the following topic:
Auxillary aides: Identify at least 3 different types. How they work. What situations they are appropriate for. What skills the rider needs in order to use them correctly. (spurs, draw reins, standing, running and german martingales etc)

Enrollment

Enrollment for each program is $135, which covers practice workshops, tutoring, testing and grading. 
Attending practice workshops and following through with completion is the responsibility of the student. Action items can be worked in any order.

This program offers no mounted work and is designed to be worked outside of regular lessons. 

You MUST be enrolled in lessons to be eligible to earn your rating.
